February 2010

Our February speaker and activities schedule are set (see more details below) – Speakers Allen Forkum, Publisher and Editor of Nashville Retrospect, on Friday, Feb 5th and Heather Gallagher, Warner Parks Naturalist and Historian, on Friday, Feb 19th; photo scan day on Friday, Feb 12th; and computer room research on Friday, Feb 26th.

Our next meeting will be Friday, February 5th and our speaker will be Allen Forkum, Publisher and Editor of the Nashville Retrospect newspaper. Nashville Retrospect is available on the racks in the lobby of our Bellevue Family Y and FiftyForward Turner Center and many other locations around Nashville. In the January issue, Allen relates stories of the Blizzard of 1951 and the tornadoes of 1957. These tornadoes came through Bellevue, created the “tornado alley” trail of Warner Parks and bounced through several other areas of Nashville and Davidson County, including the Donelson-Hermitage area which was the hardest hit. Our “Blizzard of January 2010” will give him something to “retrospect” in future years.

In the coming months we will focus our computer room research and several lectures on specific heritages … such as Scottish heritage, Irish heritage, Italian heritage, German heritage, Native American heritage, etc. Carol Hansen will be instructing us on Scottish heritage on February 26th and she is helping us secure expert speakers for these programs.

All of our meetings start at 9:00 am and we are most appreciative of Vickie’s and Bri’s assistance and support allowing us to meet at the FiftyForward facilities.

Wednesday, February 3rd – National History Day contest at Bellevue Middle School. We still need several judges and anyone interested should give me a call at 218-4580 or send me an email at bob@authors-corner.com for more details. The judging time slots are 2-3 hours and judges can anticipate judging 8-10 projects and spending 10-15 minutes per project. The student project selections are really interesting and give solace that many of the younger generation will carry-on an appreciation for history. The Bellevue Exchange Club and others from the Bellevue community will be helping with the judging. We really need your help to make Bellevue Middle School shine and to hopefully send some of our Bellevue students to the district competition.

Friday, February 5th 9:00 am to 10:30 am – speaker Allen Forkum, Publisher and Editor of Nashville Retrospect. Pick up a copy at the lobby racks to get a preview of Allen’s presentation and be primed to relate your most notable Nashville “Retrospect” memory.

Wednesday, February 10th 9:00 am to 4:00 pm – African American Cultural Series at Tennessee State University. See www.nashville.gov/mhc for more information. Registration is $18 for the full day of lectures and entertainment.

Friday, February 12th 9:00 am to 10:30 am – SOMETHING NEW – on this day Judy and I will bring our computer and scanner to the FiftyForward center for our BH&G and other FiftyForward members to scan their most precious photos, documents, and newspaper articles. We will put your scanned images on a CD for you to view on your own computers at home. All of this is free of charge and flyers with more information are available in the FiftyForward lobby or you may call me at 218-4580 or email me at bob@authors-corner.com for more details.

Wednesday, February 17th – FiftyForward On The Road Again tour of Nashville’s Historic Churches hosted by Dr. William McKee, Chair, Metropolitan Nashville Historic Commission. Flyers are available in the racks of the FiftyForward lobby and you may contact Joan Sincerbox at 646-9622 or 646-0059. Historic churches on the tour are the Temple on Harding Road, McKendree Methodist, Christ Presbyterian, First Baptist (organ recital), and the Chapel at Fisk University. Lunch will be at Swett’s Restaurant.

Thursday, February 18th 11:45 am – Mayor Karl Dean will be the featured speaker at the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon held at the Meadows Nursing Center at 8044 Coley Davis Road in Bellevue. The public is invited and the cost for non-members is $10.

Friday, February 19th 9:00 am to 10:30 am – speaker Heather Gallagher, Naturalist and Historian with the Warner Parks, will give us a photo presentation of the history of the Warner Parks, the Hodge House located on park property on Chickering Lane just off Old Hickory Boulevard, and the many historic cemeteries located within the park.

Saturday, February 20th 9:30 am to 11:30 am – Workshop at the Tennessee State Library and Archives – Land Grants and Deeds by Paul R. White. See www.tennessee.gov/tsla or call 741-2764 for more information

Monday, February 22nd 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm – Bellevue Exchange Club Third Annual Reverse Draw hosted by Chaffin’s Barn to raise money to support the Exchange Club Family Center in its efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect and other Bellevue charitable organizations. Tickets are $50 each and are fully tax deductible. First prize is $5,000, second prize is $1,500, and third prize is $500. There are numerous fantastic door prizes (airfare tickets, hotel stays, restaurant coupons, etc. - about one for every five tickets) and the Reverse Draw is limited to just 300 tickets to enhance your chances of winning. Give me a call or send me an email if you are able to support this very worthy cause. A few tickets are still available … the food is great, the evening is entertaining, and fun will be had by all.

Also note that the Buchanan Log House is updating its website and is an ideal venue for weddings and corporate meetings, replete with period catering, invitations, flowers, etc.

Snow Memories and Hot Lemonade – In my book 300 MemoryMinders to Help Your Tell Your Story, ticklers are used to help you remember the events that shape your story. One MemoryMinder is, “Do you remember your first big snow storm, playing in the snow, or dealing with problems just getting around?” My best memories growing up in Indianapolis are playing Tin Can Stick Hockey on the frozen ponds at Pleasant Run Golf Course (sometimes falling through the ice) and being Chilled to the Bone Delivering Newspapers. But there was always a reward when I got home – my mother would sit me on an old cane chair over a register blowing hot air off the oil furnace and give me a mug of hot fresh-squeezed lemonade with a maraschino cherry. Oh, for the good old days! To this day, hot lemonade with maraschino cherries trumps hot tea, hot chocolate, and coffee as my favorite wintertime drink. Let me know your favorite Snow Memory.

I am still wanting to talk to anyone having knowledge or information on the Melrose area from 1958 to 1969 as I am writing about my father’s company and the aluminum electrolytic capacitor industry in Nashville at that time. These capacitors were critical components in ALL transistor radios and early color television sets and 75% of the country’s market share came from Nashville companies Mallory, MEC, IEI, Ritchey Electronics, Hunter-Stanley, and others. The Japanese “dumping” scandals of the late 1960s ended the industry along with RCA, Zenith, Admiral, Magnavox, Hazeltine, and others moving most of their manufacturing offshore. I would especially like to talk to anyone who may have any of these old transistor radios or television chassis to see if any Nashville-manufactured capacitors are mounted on the circuit boards.

Forward your organization’s meetings and events and I will be glad to list them in my weekly emails and our www.archivelookup.com website. Each week I will be highlighting one of our historical resources, venues, or organizations … send me your stories of your research to share with our members.

The next time you come to one of our meetings – bring a friend – our membership rules are very clear and simple – you have to attend one meeting and you must have fun.
